The Police Association of Victoria says a $20 million police station planned for Bendigo is outdated even before building starts.

Typical government mentality. Take so long to build something that by the time it is finished it is totally outdated and inadequate to service the needs of the people it is there to help. This happened a lot in the Army. Equipment would have to be evaluated and developed. By the time it came into service it would be obsolete and would have cost 10 times what it was worth.

The new Bendigo station has been controversial ever since the site was announced. The chosen site was criticised as being too far away from the CBD. The current station, a modern building, is right in the CBD behind the law courts and the tourist information centre, but I heard that it will be destroyed because it doesn't fit in with the heritage buildings, as seen in these two shots:

The proposed location of the new station is on the main road into Bendigo from Melbourne, but it is a few KM south of the Bendigo CBD. However, it is directly opposite Hungry Jacks :D

The main advantage of the new station is that it will bring all of Bendigo's police units together - currently GDs and CIU are at the actual police station, regional headquarters is about half a k away, and it's another few KM to the sheds and portable buildings where the TMU and a few other units are based.

Work begins at station site

A STRONG police presence saw the first sod turned at the site that will be headquarters for the city's law enforcement officers from next year.

The old Police station will be kept and the cells will be utilised for court holding purposes. It appears the station will operate a shopfront station out of it with D24 remaining there until their possible move to Ballarat We were ripped on the new station as we had been promised a state of the art indoor underground range etc. Not getting it now due to the fact that the ground is very unstable and there are deep mineshafts underneath. Hello!! We could have told the experts that before they paid 3 million for the block! Crazy.. The actual size of the building is pretty good with some room for expansion. The site isn't ideal but it is better than some of the sites they were looking at. Opposite Hungry Jacks would be even better if they offered a decent discount!!!

What, mineshafts in the Bendigo area. Who'd have guessed that? Wow. What a bizarre discovery to make after buying the land! How inspiring!!
